Description

St. Monica was born in 331 AD in Hippo, which is modern day Algeria. She was given in marriage to a pagan man named Patricius who had a very bad temper.  He tolerated her Christian beliefs but never clung to them himself until she was finally able to convert him on his death bed. Together they had three children: Navigius, Perpetua, and Augustine. Navigius and Perpetua joined the religious life shortly after their father passed away, but Augustine fell further away from the faith of his mother. Monica prayed for her son's conversion daily. Through her powerful intercession Augustine converted and became one of the greatest saints to ever live. Monica died in 387 AD and is now buried in Ostia, Italy in a Basilica dedicated to her son, St. Augustine. St. Monica is know as the patron saint of wives and abuse victims.
