FAQs
Origins & Meaning
1. What are the origins of the Brown Scapular?
The Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel originated in the 13th century
when the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to St. Simon Stock, a Carmelite,
giving him the scapular as a sign of her protection and spiritual promise.

Our Lady’s promise is that “whoever dies clothed in this scapular shall not
suffer eternal fire.” It’s a sign of devotion and commitment to Mary, not
an automatic guarantee of salvation.

It represents being clothed in Mary’s care and the Carmelite spirit of prayer,
humility, and trust in God.
4. What does it mean to be “Enrolled in the Brown Scapular”?

confraternity of the Brown Scapular and a member of the Carmelite family, as
the Brown Scapular is a mini form of the Carmelite habit.
5. What is the connection between the Brown Scapular and the Carmelite
Order?
The Brown Scapular comes from the Carmelite habit. When you wear it, you
share spiritually in the prayers and benefits of the Carmelite family.

devotion, sharing in the prayers of the Carmelite Order.
Beliefs & Promises
7. What is the Sabbatine Privilege?
It’s an optional devotion for those who faithfully wear the Brown Scapular,
live chastely according to their state in life, and pray The Little Office of
the Blessed Virgin Mary daily, resulting in Mary taking their soul to heaven on
the first Saturday after their death.
8. Do I have to follow all the Sabbatine Privilege conditions to wear the
Brown Scapular and receive its promise?
No. The Sabbatine conditions are optional for those who wear the Brown Scapular,
not mandatory. The essential element is wearing the scapular faithfully as a
sign of devotion and striving to live a holy life, staying in a state of Grace.

The Church approves the Brown Scapular as a sign of consecration to Mary and
the promises that Our Lady gave with it. The Church highly encourages the Brown
Scapular devotion as a way to deepen your life of faith and your relationship
with Jesus and Mary.
10. Is the Brown Scapular a get-out-of-hell-free card?

devotion. May gave us the promise of the Brown Scapular, and in return we must
stay faithful, receive the sacraments, and strive to stay in a state of Grace.

life without repentance?
No. The scapular must be worn with sincere devotion and a desire to follow

Yes. The scapular’s meaning is spiritual, not magical. Wear it as a sign of
trust and devotion in Mary and Christ.

Superstition treats it like a charm; true devotion treats it as a reminder
of faith and Mary’s intercession.
