Description
St. Patrick was born in 387 AD in modern day Britain. When he was a teenager, Patrick was captured by Irish pirates and brought to Ireland as a slave. Ireland was a land of pagans and druids at this time. As a slave in Ireland, Patrick was a shepherd tending sheep. One day Patrick had a vision from God that made him go to the coast where a merchant ship was able to take him back to Britain after 6 years of captivity. Patrick reunited with his family and later began studying to become a priest. He was ordained a priest and then later a Bishop.
As a Bishop, Patrick went back to Ireland to bring the Gospel to the pagan nation. He was extremely successful in converting the Irish especially after he proved that God was much more powerful that the Druids. Patrick often used a shamrock to illustrate the 3 persons of the Trinity. He converted almost the entire nation of Ireland over the 40 years that he served there before he died in 461 AD. Patrick was buried in the first Irish church and is remembered as the Patron Saint of Ireland.
