Good Friday is a day of fasting and abstinence. Easter is a day of celebration.

The spirit of Holy Saturday is somewhere in between. Christ’s suffering on the cross is over, but He hasn’t been raised from the dead.

Here are a few tips for how to spend your Holy Saturday.

Set aside time for quiet prayer.

Catholics don’t celebrate Mass on Holy Saturday. It’s the perfect day to pray in silence, since Christ is still in the tomb. We recommend seeking solitude at home or praying while taking a walk.

You can say the Rosary (Sorrowful Mysteries) or Chaplet of Divine Mercy. Or you can  meditate.

Engage in spiritual reading.

Since Holy Saturday falls between Good Friday and Easter, you can read reflections on the Passion and resurrection. Plus, many of the Church Fathers wrote profound reflections on Jesus’ time in the tomb. You can read their writings for free here.

Adopt a small penance.

Many adult Catholics are required to fast and abstain on Good Friday. You can choose whether to fast on Holy Saturday, but don’t push yourself too hard. Rather, consider praying more or performing an extra act of service for someone.

Let the silence of Holy Saturday calm your heart and prepare it for the glorious resurrection of Christ on Easter!
