The Green Scapular

This scapular is not a Brown Scapular.

The Green Scapular calls upon Mary's intercession for Conversions, healing, and protection.

History of the Green Scapular

In 1840, Sister Justine Bisqueyburu of the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul in Paris, France, was praying when the Blessed Virgin Mary first appeared to her holding a green scapular. During later apparitions, Our Lady revealed the design and purpose of the scapular. One side showed Mary standing with rays streaming from her hands, while the other displayed the Immaculate Heart of Mary pierced by a sword and surrounded by the prayer: “Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us now and at the hour of our death.”

Mary explained that the Green Scapular would be a sacramental of conversion, healing, and protection, especially for those far from the faith. Unlike traditional scapulars worn over the shoulders, it could also be carried, placed in a room, or hidden among the belongings of someone being prayed for. Sister Justine shared these revelations with her superiors, and after many reported conversions and favors, Pope Pius IX approved the Green Scapular for the faithful in 1863.

Since then, Catholics throughout the world have used the Green Scapular as a sign of trust in the Immaculate Heart of Mary and her powerful intercession to lead souls to Jesus Christ.
