Description

St. Nicholas was a 4th century saint who was an only child born to a wealthy Christian family. Tragically his parents both died from an epidemic when Nicholas was young. He was then raised by his uncle who was a bishop. Nicholas inherited his parent's wealth and he was very generous with it throughout his life.

Nicholas eventually studied to become a priest and was then elected as Bishop of Myra. During his time as a bishop, Nicholas took part in the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD. Tradition holds that Nicholas slapped the heretic Arius in the face during this Council. Nicholas was arrested but was soon set free and reinstated as bishop when Jesus and Mary appeared to clear his name. Through the rest of his life Nicholas fought strongly against the heresy of Arianism.

After Nicholas died he was buried in the city of Myra. There are so many legends and miracles associated with St. Nicholas that he has become one of the most popular Saints to this this day. From giving presents to children around Christmas time and protecting sailors at see, St. Nicholas is revered as one of the greatest Saints. His feast day is celebrated on December 6th and he is known as the patron Saint of sailors, merchants, archers, repentant thieves, children, brewers, pawnbrokers, and students.
